Project Proposal
My LINK internship was set up with some help from Lori, my old sophomore humanities teacher. Because of her connections in Denver, she made it possible for me to explore my passion, which is music production. I will be traveling and living in Denver for 3 weeks starting on March 3rd. The music group I will be interning with is called Whomp Truck. They are relatively new, but the musicians that make music for it have been working on their craft for years. Whomp Truck creates Dubstep and Glitch Hop. Their mission is to spread good music, good vibes, and good times to the people in Denver. This internship will be a little bit different than most because the members of Whomp Truck work other jobs that make them enough money to continue doing what they love doing.
My mentor is mainly going to be Gabe. I have communicated with him through Facebook, which has made it easier for me to see who he is and what he likes to do. He has constantly asked for my input on what I want to do while I am there because he wants me to explore what I want in music production. His stage name is Citrus, and he just recently released an album with a MC from London that is available on Beatport. I can’t wait for Citrus to critique and offer feedback on the tracks that I produce. That is something that I have never been offered because I don’t know anyone with extensive enough knowledge on Electronic Music Production.
I have a few goals in mind that I want to take away from this internship. My first is to obviously improve my production skills in general. It will be very interesting to see how much I improve after working a month straight on nothing but music, and I hope I leave this internship creating more professional and interesting sounding tracks. Another big goal I have for LINK is to expand my knowledge and understand of the EDM industry in general. I want to see how it all works financially, and what stresses come with producing music. Really, I just want to see the “real deal”. The last goal I have is to tremendously improve my Djing skills because I have never actually been taught to do it. Everything I have done so far has been self-taught.
For a final project, Gabe and I were thinking of two possibilities. The first, which is my personal favorite, would be to release a track on their label. To do this, I need to get the okay from the whole crew to support it. This would mean that I would have to seriously work on making a song that does not only sound good to me, but fits the genre and style of Whomp Truck. If I don’t make a song good enough, which there is a definite possibility, I could also make a mix as a final product showing off my Dj and production skills. This would be easier because it wouldn’t be all my own production. Needless to say, I will be working around 4 hours independently every day while on this internship, and around 3-4 hours with the Whomp Truck crew making revisions and talking about how to improve my tracks.
There are a few concepts that play a role in music production. The first, is music theory. You aren’t going to make good songs until you know how to set up scales and triads for major and minor chords. This is a skill that I have been attempting to grasp and understand for a long time now. The next, is just a basic understanding of how the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) you use to create your tracks. Personally, I use Ableton Live 9. I have been using an illegal download of the software ever since I was a freshman. Since then, I have looked at millions of tutorials, and even have read books on how to use the different instruments, samplers, and effects.
