Dia de los Muertos
In this project, we started by exploring the culture and day of the dead in general. We then chose a close relative/being and wrote two paragraphs commemorating their life in spanish. We also constructed an art piece that represents that person.
El Periodismo Project Reflection
We started this project by getting into groups and choosing a spanish speaking country to study. My group chose Argentina. After that, I decided that I wanted to write about a current event because I enjoy Humanities. After about a week of looking at different topics to write on, I chose to write an article about secret documents that were found in Buenos Aires airport. Then, I wrote a 200 word piece in spanish about it. The next step was to create a news video because I chose to be in the video group as opposed to the newspaper one.
I connected to this project because of my interest in human rights and Argentina. The documents revealed secret information on the assassinations of famous artists and intellectuals at the time of civil war in Argentina. Since I traveled to Argentina a year ago, this was something that I found very appetizing and relevant to study. One thing that I liked was the initial research because I was able to connect with my old friends from Argentina and talk about intellectual things. I also enjoyed making my video because it was fun to film with my friends.
The biggest difficulty for me, was finding what different words meant and how they were conjugated. Because I was researching a political issue, the language was more professional and difficult than I was used too. I spent the majority of class time just on wordreference looking for different words, but it paid off in the end when my writing was complete.
I learned that I am actually pretty camera shy. Although fun, it was difficult to focus on what I was saying in spanish while being filmed. After a few shots, I was able to to it good enough to turn in. All in all, it was a good experience for me, and I perfected my spanish announcer voice.
Through looking deeper into issues and news in spanish speaking countries, I have become more interested in traveling and learning the language in general. Its nice to talk about another country besides the United States in school, and I enjoyed every minute of research. This is valuable because spanish is becoming more and more relevant in my own life, which will encourage me to work harder and focus more to learn the language.
